Egypt, AIIB ink 250-mln-euro deal to finance infrastructure in Alexandria

Egypt's Ministry of International Cooperation and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) signed a 250 million-euro deal to fund a substructure project in Alexandria, the Egyptian ministry said Thursday.

The project will upgrade an old railway that connects the central and the northeast regions of the coastal city and build an electric underground, said a ministry statement.

The new project will help the northern city reduce traffic congestion, boost green transformation and decrease harmful emissions, according to the statement.

The project which costs 1.5 billion euros will be carried out with a joint fund from Asian and European financial institutions, including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the European Investment Bank, the AIIB, and the French Development Agency.

The AIIB, a China-initiated multilateral financial institution, began its operation in January 2016 with an agenda focusing on supporting sustainable development through infrastructure and other productive sectors in Asia and beyond.
